Visit Alton and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Alton, Staffordshire, is one half of “The Rhineland of Staffordshire”; the other half is Alton Towers. The stone-built village of Alton lies East of Cheadle, on the rocky, wooded slopes of the Churnet valley, all towers, turrets and spires. Every road and lane is a hill; every bend or gap in the trees or houses offers the kind of view more usually associated with central Europe than with the English Midlands. Above the village, on the edge of a sheer cliff high above the river, are Alton Castle, now a Roman Catholic boys' preparatory school, and Alton Hospital: impressive and picturesque buildings designed by A. W. N. Pugin for the 16th Earl of Shrewsbury and built between 1840 and 1852. In the gardens of the school stand the remains of the medieval castle — a ruined round tower and a part of the wall — the last link with Alton's Norman beginnings. The castle was built about 1175 by Bertram de Verdun, a Crusader with Richard Lionheart, and an arcade in the nearby church dates from about the same time. Alton itself contains some interesting old houses but the most unusual building is the sinister-looking tower in the centre of the village. Circular, built of heavy, dark-grey stone, with a small door and no windows, this was the village lock-up.
