Visit Bridge of Orchy and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Bridge of Orchy, Argyll and Bute. This village is at the head of Glen Orchy, and it marks the place where the new road across the Moor of Rannoch to Glencoe diverges from the old one. It was formerly famous for its pine forest, but most of the trees were cut down in the 19th century. Some trees, however (believed to be relics of the ancient Caledonian Forest), are still standing on the East side of Loch Tulla.
The eye here constantly turns to the splendid cone of Ben Doran (3,523 ft). Its dominating yet symmetrical shape with its long sweeping sides gives it a poetic appearance. Indeed, it has inspired poetry. Duncan Ban MacIntyre, the famous Gaelic poet, who came from near here, wrote what some scholars hold to be his masterpiece. It is in evocative Gaelic addressed to and descriptive of Ben Doran: a pure example of Gaelic “natural poetry”, yet with undertones of spiritual character.
