Broughton-in-Furness, Cumbria. This old market town is less than 1 mile East of the River Duddon. The Duddon Valley, on which Wordsworth wrote a series of poems, can be explored from here, and for climbing there is Black Combe (1,969 ft) on the West. The Church of St Mary, in the Early English style, was largely rebuilt in 1873, but parts may date from the 12^th century and a fine Norman south doorway remains. Of the old castle of the Broughton family the tower and the dungeons are all that remain. Swinside Stone Circle is 5 miles West and 20 minutes walk from the road. Over 50 stones, many fallen, make a circle roughly 100 ft across. It is 2,000 to 3,000 years old, and called Sunken-kirk but its purpose is unknown.
