Visit Budleigh Salterton and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Budleigh Salterton, Devon. Originally (from the 13th century or so) a salt-panning village, hence the name, Budleigh grew during the Napoleonic Wars, not as elegantly as Sidmouth, but cosily. Almost anything grows here. There is plenty of scope for outdoor recreations, including the best golf course in South Devon. Between the red cliffs is a big beach with unusually large pebbles (no sand) and lobster fishermen not short of local custom. There are occasional pretty late Georgian houses, as in East Terrace. Near the sea-front, in Fore Street, is the small but enterprising Fairlynch Arts Centre and Museum in an l8th-century thatched house with a look-out. There is a nice walk from the easternmost sea-front car park to the mouth of the River Otter, just across which are the remains of a fine garden laid out for a grand house which was never built. About 1¾ miles West, West Down Beacon above 500-ft cliffs is a tremendous viewpoint. Three miles North East, Ladram, where red sandstone crags rear off-shore, is one of the more spectacular Devon bays.
Two miles North, East Budleigh church was attended by the parents of Sir Walter Raleigh (the front two pews on the left were theirs). It has a fine collection of carved bench-ends (mainly 16th-century) and round it are pleasant cob-and-thatched cottages. The farm where Raleigh was born in 1552, Hayes Barton, is 1 mile West of the village.
One mile further North are Bicton Gardens, and 2½ miles North West, Woodbury Common is a surprisingly Surrey-like heath and pine-tree hill, good for walking and views.
