Visit Cholsey and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Cholsey, Oxfordshire, is only a mile from the River Thames near Wallingford, and has some interesting historical associations. Ethelred the Unready founded an abbey here in 986, probably in expiation of the murder of his brother Edward. This was destroyed by the Danes who ravaged the area, and later the abbey was attached to that of Reading. Of all these buildings nothing remains, but it is thought that part of the cruciform church, namely the central tower, may date back to Anglo-Saxon times. However, St Mary's today is mostly Norman, though the chancel was lengthened in the 13th century and the tower raised some time later. Amongst the monuments there is a brass to John Mere, vicar, dated 1471.
