Visit Danby and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Danby, North Yorkshire. The classic account of moorland life is still Forty Years in a Moorland Parish by Canon John Christopher Atkinson, who spent 53 of his 86 years at St Hilda's Church here and was buried in the churchyard in 1900. The village, also called Dale End, is at the head of Danby Dale which runs South into the moors. The church is 2 miles from the village, with the rectory halfway between. The church has a Perpendicular south porch and a fragment or so of other old stone, but is chiefly an l8th-century nave on a 19th-century chancel. One mile South East of the village is the ruin of 14th-century Danby Castle, now built into a farmhouse. Catherine Parr's second husband, Lord Latimer, owned it in those days. After his death she married, and survived, Henry VIII. Near the castle is the packhorse Duck Bridge, built around 1386. Danby Dale is a beautiful broad valley of the Esk, with many ancient cairns. Much scenic beauty awaits you if you cannot resist the names of Little Fryup and Great Fryup.
