Visit and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Eskdale, Cumbria, can be reached either up the extremely steep Hardknott Pass from the East, or from the West. The west end is reached by various roads from the coastal area, and one crossing over the Esk from further down the Duddon Valley. In summer, as a change from driving, you can take the miniature railway from Ravenglass as far as Boot. The lower reaches, green with farmland, have occasional houses dotted about and footpaths near the River Esk. Beyond the villages of Eskdale Green and Boot the valley turns towards the North, leaving the road before Hardknott, and rises into the wild regions between the two Sca Fell peaks (both over 3,000 ft) and Bow Fell (nearly 3,000 ft). At the end is Esk Hause, where the Sca Fell and Bow Fell tracks join at the watershed above Borrowdale. Around the hause is a conjunction of tracks well known to climbers — those from Wasdale, from Borrowdale and from Langdale. At 2,490 ft. this is the highest pass in Lakeland.
