Visit and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Frosterley, County Durham. Churches throughout County Durham exhibit fonts, pillars and memorials in Frosterley marble, actually a grey limestone full of fossils which becomes black when polished. In the 13th century it was as greatly prized here as Purbeck marble in the South. Frosterley marble, which occurs in thin bands between courses of limestone, is now only produced for special orders. In St Michael's Church, built in 1866, a beautiful sample of the marble is mounted near the door with the tribute: “This Frosterley marble and limestone, quarried for centuries in this parish, adorns cathedrals and churches throughout the world.”
