Visit Gifford and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Gifford, East Lothian. Situated on the Gifford Water, with fine views South to the Lammermuirs, this 18th century village formerly had many small industries, including linen-weaving and paper-making, and the Bank of Scotland notes were made from Gifford paper in the early 18th century. However, all the industries, and the three big livestock fairs, have died out, and the village is now noted for its peacefulness and old-world charm.
The present church was built in 1708—10. It contains a l5th century bell and a 17th century pulpit; the church replaced a 13th century. Collegiate Church that is now a family burial vault in the grounds of Yester House. This old church is well preserved and has many monuments of the Tweeddale family. The village has retained its mercat cross.
A famous personality connected with Gifford is the Rev. John Witherspoon (1722—94) who was born in the manse and emigrated to America. He became first President of New Jersey College (now Princeton University) and was one of the signatories of the American Declaration of Independence.
A narrow hilly road leads South from Gifford into the Lammermuirs, ascending to 1,346 ft at Newlands Hill, with fine views of the Lothians. On this way out of the village, travellers may note a reed-fringed mere, rather than loch or lake, by the South gate of Yester.
