Visit Gorebridge and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Gorebridge, Midlothian (4 miles South of Dalkeith). On the West of the town are the ruined remains of Newbyres Castle, with its square tower dating from the 16th century. Stobs Mills were erected in 1793 and were the first gunpowder works in Scotland. They were on the East side of the Gore Water, but nothing now remains of the building.
Nearly 2 miles North West of the town is a fort on the summit of Camp Wood Hill (900 ft). It is traceable only in parts, with remains of an earth rampart 20 ft broad and 3 ft high; it measured some 420 ft across.
Camp Wood is also associated with the extraordinary eccentric known locally as “Camp Meg”. She was a lady in comfortable and delicate circumstances living originally in the West of Scotland. She abandoned her home and husband to become a female recluse in a hut that she built for herself in Camp Wood. Quite incidentally, as it were, she established a local reputation as an efficient horse-doctor, a profession she practised with gusto. She also rode in local races wearing men's garments. Though she had retired to this life in the early 19th century, her memory still lives on in the district.
