Visit Hale and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Hale, Cheshire, was called by Jane Carlyle, wife of Thomas Carlyle, the “beautifullest village in all England”. It has old cottages and flowers, and an l8th century church with a 500-year-old tower. In the churchyard was buried the Childe of Hale, John Middleton, said to have been over 9 ft tall. There are many tales of this giant who visited the court of James I and defeated his wrestler. South of the village is the southernmost tip of Lancashire, and East of it a ford where Prince Rupert is said to have escaped into Cheshire after the Battle of Marston Moor.
