Visit Harbottle and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Harbottle, Northumberland. This ancient village, deep in Coquetdale, used to be known for its good health, having one of the lowest death rates known. The fragmentary remains of Harbottle castle are on a hill at the north-eastern outskirts of the village. It was the second castle on the site, built about 1160, but by 1541 it was a ruin. Here in 1515 Queen Margaret of Scotland gave birth to a daughter who was to become mother-in-law of Mary Queen of Scots and grandmother of James I. Further along the road, a footpath on the left leads up to the dramatic rock formation known as the Drake (or Dragon) Stone. It is 30 ft high, rising above Harbottle Crag. It was the scene of Druidic rites, and well into the 19th century sick children were passed over it to be cured. In a lonely lake near it, blackheaded gulls breed. The modern Harbottle Castle was designed by Dobson in 1829 and includes 17th-century work.
