Visit Highgate and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Highgate, Greater London. Highgate and Hampstead are often associated, partly because they are linked on the map by the high-pitched road between them with wonderful views over London and the Home Counties, but more because they have similar personalities. Highgate is older. Rich people who fled the plague in 1665 settled in Highgate, but long before that Dick Whittington, who became Sir Richard and Lord Mayor of London, sat on Highgate Hill and listened to Bow Bells. There is a monument to him and his cat, put up in 1964. Francis Bacon died there in 1626. The poet Andrew Marvel (1621—78) had a house there. The best part of Highgate is an l8th-century village. It is full of unexpected corners and delightful Georgian residential roads, most notably the Grove at the top of the hilt where several famous writers, including Coleridge, have lived. It also has the huge, hillside cemetery with the tombs of Karl Marx and many other famous people. The vast Victorian mausolea are a wonderful example of the taste of their time. Waterlow Park, which was the garden of Lauderdale House, now a refreshment room, once belonged to Charles II's notorious minister, the Duke of Lauderdale, who lent it to Nell Gwynn to the annoyance of the neighbours.
