Visit Hucknall and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. The village of Hucknall is remarkable only for its church, and the Church of St Mary Magdalen is remarkable only for two things. It was here that Lord Byron's body was brought to be buried with his ancestors when his family discovered that permission for him to be interred in Westminster Abbey was unlikely to be granted. It is a place of pilgrimage for Greeks into whose War of independence Byron had thrown himself too wholeheartedly for his already weakened constitution, and for whose cause he died. His bust is on the chancel wall with a lamp of brass burning continually, and in the floor is set a stone sent by the King of Greece and decorated with a brass laurel wreath. His mother had been brought to be buried here from the family home at Newstead Abbey 13 years before. His one child, Augusta Ada, was buried by his side in 1852. It was only in 1968 that a memorial of Lord Byron — “mad, bad, and dangerous to know” - was allowed in Poets' Corner at the Abbey. The other remarkable thing about the church is the set of 25 stained-glass windows by Kempe, This is Victorian stained glass at its best. It begins with the east window of 1883; the others are mainly 1888 to 1890.
