John o' Groats, Highland. The name of John o' Groats has become a household word and a favourite destination for tourists as the most northerly point of the mainland of the British Isles, although that distinction correctly belongs to Dunnet Head. Various road races terminate here, such as Maiden Kirk to John o' Groats (280 miles), and Lands End to John o' Groats (873 miles).

The name derives from a Dutchman, John de Groot, who is said to have come to run the Orkney ferry with two brothers in the late 15^th century. Later there were eight descendants, joint owners of the estate, and to obviate problems of precedence an octagonal house with eight doors and an octagonal table were built. The house has gone, but the site is marked by a mound and flagpole. Beside it is a hotel built in 1875—6, with an octagonal tower. There are gravestones of the Groot family in Canisbay churchyard.

The last house in Scotland is an old whitewashed fisherman's cottage built in the traditional style with a roof of Caithness flag stones. It is now a small souvenir shop. There is a fine view over to Orkney on a clear day, with Stroma Island lying off shore. On the beach may be found the pretty little European cowrie shells, known as “Groatie Buckles”.
