Killingworth, Tyne and Wear. A central feature of this new town is a lake which has been thoughtfully adapted from an old coal 'flash' — a section of badly drained land caused through subsidence—for use as a sailing centre. Many of the town's buildings have won awards for design. On the main road near the south entrance to the town is Dial Cottage, home of the railway pioneer George Stephenson, when he was brakesman and engineer at a nearby pit in the early 1800's.
