Visit Mow Cop and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Mow Cop, Cheshire. A stark limestone ridge rising well over 1,000 ft above the Cheshire Plain and the lowland towns of Congleton and Astbury, it is in fact the last escarpment of the Pennines in their southward sweep from the Peak District. The climb to the top provides a rewarding view in all directions, of undulating hills and contrasting sweeps of broad fertile valley. It was here at the summit that a beacon tower was raised in the days of the Armada to signal news of invasion. The beacon is gone, but in its place stands a sham ruin, built in 1750 by Randle Wilbraham on a rock called “The Old Man of Mow” and known as Mow Cop Castle to hosts of summer picnickers. On this site, too, in 1807, the Primitive Methodists held their first meeting. Mow Cop covers six acres of country and is owned by the National Trust.
