Visit North Queensferry and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
North Queensferry, Fife, is a village at the extremity of the Ferryhill peninsula. This village arose to house a colony of ferrymen and their families. Traditionally, it is said to have been established by Queen Margaret, who gave the inhabitants the exclusive right of ferrying. Difficult though it may be to believe, this little specialized place had in 1800 no fewer than thirteen inns. Most of these must have contended for the custom of north-going travellers who, at this passage, had endured their first touch of the sea.
The Tower House was built in 1809 after the ferry trustees had established headquarters there. The old burial ground at North Queens-ferry has a high wall with the inscription on it: “This is done by the sailers in North Ferrie 1752”. The wall includes the gable-end of an old chapel dedicated to St James of Compostella, the patron saint of travellers. It was established under the patronage of James I of Scotland.
It is from North Queensferry that you may perceive the most impressive upward-looking view of the Forth Rail Bridge with all its intricacies of metal mechanism hanging almost menacingly above you.
