Norton Disney, Lincolnshire. A timeless village on the wooded banks of the River Witham. Nothing remains of its ancient castle nor of the manor house built from its ruins in the 17^th century, but the monuments in the wonderful old Church of St Peter continue to keep alive the name of the Disney family. From the 13^th century until the time of James lithe d'lsigny lords of the manor influenced the cultural and religious character of the small farming community here. The name changed from the Norman form to Disney, and lives in our memory of Walt Disney, who was a descendant of the junior branch. In its early days the church belonged to Sempringham Priory, it has an Early English nave of three bays, a Decorated chancel with north chapel, a Perpendicular tower, a Jacobean pulpit with canopy, and an Elizabethan screen. In the chancel is a beautiful recumbent effigy of a lady, said to be Joan d'isigny, c. 1350. An exceptional late palimpsest brass set in a hinged frame on the north side of the chapel bears a Dutch inscription of 1518 about the founding of a chantry in the Netherlands. The glass of the east window commemorates the Lord St Vincent whose title came down to him from John Jervis, the admiral who was raised to the peerage after his great victory over the Spaniards in 1797 near Cape St Vincent.
