Visit Otterburn and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Otterburn, Northumberland. The battle of Otterburn (better known in song as Chevy Chase) was fought in August 1388. Historically it may have settled nothing but it achieved fame through the best known of border ballads. It was fought between soldiers led by the Earl of Douglas and Sir Henry Percy. The Scots won the moonlight affray but Douglas was killed on the battlefield about l½ miles North West. There is a memorial at Bennetsfield. Otterburn is a sleepy kind of place on the River Rede on the Newcastle-Carter Bar road. This route, which crosses the Cheviot Hills, offers immense blue vistas. The Otterburn Towers Hotel occupies the battlemented mansion which was built on to a medieval peel-tower. The Otterburn Mill, still using an old water-wheel, produces widely known tweeds and rugs.
