Peterlee, County Durham. The most distinctive of Durham's new towns, Peterlee was established near Easington to accommodate some 30,000 people, to provide a shopping and recreational centre for many more, and to attract industry into the south-eastern part of the county.

Peterlee has what most new towns can only dream about — a nature reserve of its own. Castle Eden Dene, now owned by the development corporation, is one of the last unspoilt woodlands in eastern Durham. It runs about 3 miles to the North Sea. Hundreds of species of flowers, grasses, ferns, trees and shrubs as well as bird, animal and insect life have been identified here. In the tiny village at the head of the dene is Castle Eden Castle, an l8th-century mansion now the property of the National Coal Board. In the 1764 church, a rich stained-glass window by L. C. Evetts commemorates the last survivor of the Burdon family which held the manor from 1758.

Peterlee is named after Peter Lee who died in 1935. He started work in the pits at 10 and rose to become president of the Miners' Federation and first chairman of a Labour county council. He was also a Methodist preacher.
