Visit Portobello and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Portobello, City of Edinburgh. If you continue eastwards some 3 miles away from Edinburgh you reach Portobello which is on the seafront. This exotic-sounding place received its name in the early 18th century from a Scottish sailor who had assisted in capturing the Spanish fortress of Puerto Bello in the isthmus of Darien. He called his house by the sea “Porto Bello”. In Regency times, at the beginning of the last century, Portobello set up as an Edinburgh seaside resort — a kind of Scottish Brighton. It is still a seaside resort where the Firth of Forth surrenders to the North Sea, but of a humbler kind. Some pleasant little Regency buildings derivative of the New Town style remain there.
