Visit Sanquhar and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Sanquhar, Dumfries and Galloway. A small burgh on the bank of the River Nith, Sanquhar is chiefly known in history by two Sanquhar Declarations made by Covenanters; the first was affixed to the mercat cross in 1680 by Richard Cameron, who disowned and declared war on Charles II; the second by James Renwick in 1685, against James VII and II. A granite obelisk now stands in place of the mercat cross.
Sanquhar became a royal burgh in 1484 under the protection of its castle, the seat of the Crichton family. The castle passed in 1639 to the 1st Duke of Queensberry, who built Drumlanrig, but spent only one night in it, preferring Sanquhar Castle, which, although mainly dating from 16th and 17th centuries, has some l5th-century work. It stands South of the town.
The tolbooth dates from 1735, and is a fine example of Scottish architecture.
Eliock Castle, a tower-house 2 miles South of Sanquhar, was the birthplace of the Admirable Crichton, that l6th-century polymath genius who was killed in a brawl in Mantua at the age of 22. Veitch of Eliock was a famous 18th-century Law Lord.
