Visit Scunthorpe and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire. This large industrial town has evolved within a single century from a group of small villages including Frodingham, Brumby, Crosby and Ashby. This rapid growth was due to the ironstone beds discovered in about 1864 around the area, which are believed to be the most extensive in Europe. In 1967 they produced 118 per cent of all the ingot steel and 165 per cent of all the pig iron manufactured in Britain.
To the South of Scunthorpe near the railway there has been some excellent town planning and modern building. Outstanding are the Civic Centre built in 1962 in Central Park and the Civic Theatre. The 13th-century Church of St Lawrence has extensive 20th-century additions, though the new Church of St Hugh, built in 1939 in Brumby just South of here, is perhaps more interesting to students of architecture. Brumby Hall has a three-storied, l7th-century porch with a sundial dated 1637. Now a students' hostel, it was in turn the property of the Bellinghams, Fiennes and Pinders.
Two miles North of the borough is Normanby Hall, built in 1825—9 by the famous Sir Robert Smirk for Sir Robert Sheffield. The reception rooms and double staircase form a setting for Regency furniture and works of art, and the house has 40 acres of lawns and gardens.
