Visit and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Stoke-Sub-Hamdon, Somerset. From Hamdon Hill immediately to the South of this village came, and still comes, the yellow Ham Hill stone which makes beautiful the villages and grand houses of this area. The Britons fortified the hill. The Romans quarried it and made it one of their main military strongholds in Somerset. The line of their ramparts can be well appreciated from the A303, a little North East of its junction with the A3083. Today the grass-covered mounds and pits of old quarryings and fortifications on its top make sheltered and popular picnic places with good views.
Stoke-sub-Hamdon church (actually at East Stoke about ¾ miles East of the main village) is basically Norman, of Ham stone and attractive. Its porch (1325), with Norman carvings over the church door, is exceptional. The village itself is virtually all of Ham stone, mainly old and amazingly unspoilt by the main road. Beside the road North from its centre is a magnificent set of Tudor and earlier buildings called the Priory, now owned by the National Trust. The great hall can be visited. Behind the nearby Fleur-de-Lis Inn is a fives court, built c. 1756 to discourage the playing of the game against the church walls. The inn is basically c. 1540.
