Visit Tonbridge and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Tonbridge, Kent. An ancient town: there was a settlement here in Anglo-Saxon and, perhaps, Roman times. Built on the navigable extremity of the Medway, it has a long history of commercial importance, and is still a thriving town.
Its most important ancient landmark, on a rise in the centre of the town, is the ruined Norman castle of which there are substantial remains. The massive gatehouse with its flanking drum-towers is early 14th century, as is the shell of the keep. The remains of the wall date from the 12th century. Inside the wall is a tremendous mound which may have been the site of an earlier Anglo-Saxon fort, but of which no trace remains. In later years the castle passed through many hands and 18th-century builders pillaged it for materials.
The Parish Church of SS. Peter and Paul is substantially Early English, but there is evidence of earlier work. There are a number of later additions, and the church was enlarged and restored in the 1870s.
The town is the home of the famous Tonbridge School founded in 1553 by Sir Andrew Judd, Master of the Skinners' Company and a former Lord Mayor of London.
There are numerous walks around the district, a favourite one being along River Walk, following the banks of the Medway, with good views of the castle; also through the low-water meadows, criss-crossed by paths and channels, and well shaded by willows.
