Visit Westerham and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Westerham, Kent. In the main street and around the tiny green of this village stand a number of old buildings, including two coaching inns. The village is notable as the birthplace of General James Wolfe, victor of the decisive battle between the English and French at Quebec in 1759, in which he lost his life. Standing at the head of the green and dominating the main street is a bronze statue of him wielding his sword.
Quebec House, where he lived as a boy, is a l6th-century mansion largely rebuilt in the 17th century. It is now maintained by the National Trust as a museum to his memory, and contains a collection of relics of his life and career. It is open to the public at advertised times in the summer.
Squerryes Court, a mansion of the late 17th century, also has Wolfe connections. He was a friend of the Warde family whose descendants still own the house, and it was in their garden that he received his commission in 1741; a monument marks the spot. The house has a collection of Dutch paintings, a number of portraits, and period furniture and tapestries; there is also a room set aside for Wolfe exhibits.
A more recent famous person with close connections with the town is Sir Winston Churchill, who lived at Chartwell, 2½ miles south, for over 40 years. There is a bronze statue of Sir Winston by Oscar Nemon on Westerham green. The white marble plinth was given by Marshal Tito and the people of Yugoslavia.
The parish church dates from the 13th to 15th century with a three-gabled east end and a squat tower. It has a rare spiral staircase leading up the tower, and painted on wood are the arms of Edward VI, also a rarity. There are some fine stained-glass windows, including a memorial window to Wolfe by Burne-Jones. The font is l4th-century and here Wolfe was baptized, as were two of Sir Winston Churchill's grandchildren.
