Westonzoyland, Somerset, was the headquarters of King James II's army before the Battle of Sedgemoor (6 July 1685) — England's last major ground battle — in which they defeated the untrained and primitively armed forces of Charles II's illegitimate son, the Duke of Monmouth, claimant to the throne. The battle took place about ½mile North West of the church. It began between 1 and 2 am and was all over in one and a half hours. Sixteen of the King's men were killed, some 300 rebels. A number of prisoners were shot or hanged on the spot. About 500 were locked up in the church till daybreak, many of them wounded. Five died in the church. The survivors were then herded to Bridgwater, some being hanged en route.
The church's superb yellow-grey tower is a landmark in a flat, fen landscape. The building is mainly 14th- and 15th-century. Inside, it is high, light and uncluttered, with a tremendous tie-beam roof and great expanses of flagstone floor. The village is now a dormitory for Bridgwater's factories and has much new housing.
A memorial marking the battle site is down a track beside a rhine (ditch-canal) at the village's edge.
