Visit York and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
York, North Yorkshire. The Romans chose this dry site beside the Ouse for their fortress of Eburacum. Later, the Danes founded a colony here, and the Normans built their fortifications before prosperity came with the medieval wool trade.
The city's history is written in its streets. Four medieval gates lead in through walls, built on Roman foundations, that gird the old city fir 3 miles. Most of the walls are intact and can be followed by a rampart walk. The Ouse flows through the city; narrow streets such as High and Low Petergate link crooked squares and Georgian grace predominates in Micklegate and St Saviourgate. Across the short, narrow Shambles (from the Old English shamel, meaning a slaughterhouse) old timber-framed houses lean towards one another.
There are many small old churches, quaint and often glorious towers and the breathtaking spectacle of the Minster. It took, two-and-a—half centuries, from 1220 to 1470, to complete this poem in stone. Inside, a kaleidoscope of light explodes from windows of medieval stained glass that are among the art treasures of the world.
