Arthog, Gwynedd, is a small village on the South shore of the Mawddach estuary, opposite Barmouth and upstream from the long railway bridge that crosses the estuary. Tyrau-mawr (2,167 ft), the westerly summit of the Cader Idris range, rises immediately behind; its beautifully wooded lower slopes are the chief glory of Arthog. The Arthog Falls, in the grounds of the castellated Arthog Hall, are impressive after rain, and the woods that surround Tyn-y-Coed House are delightful. The steep lane up to Cader Idris comes out on to the open moorlands at the point where the Ffordd Ddu (Black Road) comes over the open hill-side to the West. This grass-grown track may be an old Roman road. The drovers certainly used it. It curves round the western slopes of the Cader range for 7 miles to descend into the Dysynni valley at Llanegryn. It is a memorable walk. The Llynau Cregennen, 800 ft up behind Arthog, are two enchanting tarns with high crags of Tyrau-mawr in the background.
