Visit Brora and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Brora, Highland. Now a holiday centre at the mouth of the River Brora, with fine salmon and trout fishing, an extensive sandy beach, and a golf course, Brora has an oddly contrasting past history of industrialism.
The coal mine, dated from 1529, was acquired by the miners themselves as a co-operative enterprise. The distillery at Clyneleish was started in 1819 and produced excellent whisky. Both are now been closed.
The woollen mills, which have an international reputation for tweeds and yarns, attract hundreds of welcome visitors.
The small harbour used to be the centre of a fishing industry, but is now not much used. It was from there that the first settlers for New Zealand left the north of Scotland.
