Visit Clydebank and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire. In 1871, the now well-known site of the Clydebank was occupied only by a farm. Late in that year James and George Thomson had to move from Govan and chose this ground for a shipyard just opposite the mouth of the River Cart; the first ship was launched in 1872, and the population began to leap in size by 1881 there were 1,634 inhabitants. In 1882 the American firm of Singers set up a sewing machine factory at Kilbowie, and the place grew round “the yard” and “the factory”. Clydebank achieved burgh status in 1886.
