Dollar, Clackmannanshire, is a small orderly rural town between Stirling and Milnathort, and known locally as the “classic burgh”. It is probably best known for its Academy, set up in 1818 with an endowment from John McNab, a local boy who made a fortune as a sea-captain. The original school building was designed by William Playfair, the architect responsible for the Royal Scottish Academy, the National Gallery, and other New Town building in Edinburgh. Dollar Glen, on the flank of King's Seat, which is 2,111 ft high, with its ravines, paths, and bridges, makes a pleasant approach to Castle Campbell. A hilltrack from the Castle leads North for 3 miles to Glendevon. The residential, academic character of the town has been preserved by a local government policy of strict control over development.
