Visit Llanberis and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Llanberis, Gwynedd. There is an old Llanberis and a new one. The first is now called Nant Pens after the river that runs through the famous Pass of Llanberis, the bouldered ravine that shoulders through Snowdonia to the twin lakes, Padarn and Pens, under the Elidir Fawr and Fach (3,029 and 2,564 ft). On one side of Llyn Penis rise the very considerable slate quarries of Dinorwic, thought to be one of the greatest in the world. On the other side stands the single, round peel-tower called Dolbadarn Castle. The history of the present structure is disputed. But it is fairly certain that the Princes of Gwynedd had a fortalice on the site. Owen the Red was held prisoner there for twenty-three years by his brother, Llywelyn ap Iorwerth (otherwise called the Great), to cure him of his presumption in challenging the right of inheritance. This seems to have established a precedent, for Owain Glyndwr used it as a prison for his enemy, Lord Grey of Ruthin, until the ransom of 10,000 marks was duly paid. Between the days of the Llywelyn ap Iorwerth and those of Glyndwr. it was a stronghold of Dafydd, brother of the last Llywelyn, and was captured for Edward I by the Earl of Pembroke. Padarn is 2 miles long and 94 ft deep; Pens, 1 mile long and 114 ft deep. Both hold excellent fishing.
From Llanberis the most accessible route to the height of Snowdon is reached.
