Visit Masham and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Masham, North Riding. Just off the main road is the shady market square with a maypole and cross, but the market for which the village was chartered in 1250 has long since ceased to be held. Here the River Ure has left Wensleydale and is crossed by a four-arched bridge built in 1754. St Mary's Church at the corner of the square has a Norman tower on which a l5th-century spire was raised. In the churchyard is the treasured circular shaft of an Anglo-Saxon cross, probably 9th-century work. It shows four tiers of figures. Across the river in Swinton Park, part of the castle is used for a Conservative College.
