Thirsk, North Yorkshire, is a thriving market town and convenient stop at a major crossroads. You can hurry through the newer part of town on one main road or crawl through the crowded market square on another. The square, still cobbled, is surrounded by old shops and inns. This was an important posting station in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Three Tuns is the oldest inn, an l8th-century front with a fine staircase inside. The Fleece, also Georgian, was once the main coaching inn. It has horse paintings and a coaching clock by Palliser. The Crown Inn dates from 1682. St Mary's Church may well be the best example of Perpendicular work in the county, a notable dark stone building with fanciful openwork parapet outlining walls, tower and porch. The tower is braced by stepped buttresses; l5th-century details include the door in the porch, the barrel roof of the nave and some glass. The church was begun in 1430 and completed in the early 16th century, with l9th-century restoration. It was based on a chantry founded by Robert Thirsk who died in 1419. His small brass memorial is inside. Thirsk Hall, a handsome l8th-century brick house, stands across from the church.
