Visit and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Portree, Isle of Skye, is in the Inner Hebrides. The chief town, or capital, of Skye, Portree lies in a sheltered loch on the centre of the East coast of the island. It has a harbour and a pier for steamers, some of which make tours of the island and connect Skye with its celebrated and smaller sister isle of Raasay. There are hotels and guest houses. The name derives from the Gaelic meaning “king's haven”, and recalls the visit made to Skye by James V when he was sailing through the Hebrides in an attempt to control these outlying islands of his dominions. Portree is excellently placed for tours in all directions over Skye. It is in its own right a pleasing little town with many characteristically whitewashed houses.
