Visit Kilwinning and the surrounding villages and stay in bed & breakfast accommodation:
Kilwinning, North Ayrshire. Every Freemason worthy of the name looks to Kilwinning as the Mother Lodge in Scotland. The town is an important communication centre, lying between Ardrossan and Glasgow, and Ardrossan and Irvine. It surrounds an ancient abbey, built in the reign of David I (1124—53), of which only scanty ruins remain. In days gone by, when the Scots burgher was fonder of his archery than his “gowf”, an annual competition for bowmen was held at the abbey, with prizes for each part shot off the papingo that was suspended from the tower. The “shoot” is still commemorated by the Ancient Society of Kilwinning Archers, who annually shoot at a silver papingo set in the traditional place.
